Bailee

Bailee is Irish.  Sort of. Well her name is, so I think she is (at heart) too.

These 2 are part Irish too.  Eli is just excited for the green jell-o he will have tonight.

Eli's attempting a (rare) smooch.  Kiss him! He's (part) Irish!

Happy St. Patrick's Day~~ From all of us!

Now & Then

I made dinner including some salads.  Andy has always been a ranch guy.  He uses ranch like many use ketchup, dipping anything and everything in it.  So I put the amount of ranch I thought he'd like in his bowl.  He walked up to the counter and looked at the salad.
"Oh, you put ranch on my salad" he said.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

It was move in day.  This year instead of the dorms we were moving into a house.  It was yellow with dark brown trim.  We named it The Mustard Seed, but over the course of the year it got renamed by everyone else as The Vortex.

This house will always hold many memories for me.  The raw meat on top of the fridge.  The mice in my bedroom. The toilet on the front lawn.  Finding out about 9/11.  Dr. Mario and pizza.  My roommate left behind on my 21st birthday (which happened to be the day after 9/11).  The neighbors who parked in our drive way and me shouting out the window to them. Mattress rides down the stairs. Arguments about the thermostat.  And more.

I was moving in with 3 other soccer teammates.  Every year we had to move in weeks before the rest of the students to train for the upcoming season.  We spent the days bonding over 2 or 3-a-day practices.  Sweating. Eating. Rest and collapse. Repeat.  I still wonder how we didn't argue over the 1 shower throughout the year when we all had places to go and things to do after practice.  The yellow house had 4 bedrooms.  One was significantly larger and K decided to pay more to have that large room.  S didn't even have a closet and she was the fashionable one. L had the bedroom with the window that I threatened the poor parking neighbors through.  I chose the one bedroom that was downstairs.  It wasn't even a bedroom-it was an old dining room.  There was no door on my closet but my mom had sewn me a curtain out of blue material that had stars on it.  I liked my room (minus the mice).  It was right next to the kitchen.

After my parents drove away, leaving me to be tortured by "Coach" I looked at all the boxes in my room.  I had some unpacking to do.  I had a cd playing and I was getting over a break up.  I wasn't happy but I was ready to move on.  I needed to.  I bet my friends and family were happy I had the distraction of soccer to keep me healthy.  The cd was "Five For Fighting" and I loved every song on that album.  It echoed because the room wasn't lived in yet-nothing on the walls-no blanket on the bed.  Deep breaths.  A new year.

The year went on.  We had another losing season as the Blue Devils.  We ate a ton of spaghetti and argued over the dishes.  I spent part of my winter break taking 2 classes for some extra credits.  That meant I was with college friends to celebrate new years eve.

I had moved on, no longer waiting for the phone to ring.  I had gone on a few dates.  I didn't have 1 particular guy in mind.  One guy, let's call him A (not Andy) was pursuing me.  I couldn't figure out if I really wanted to "date" him or not.  He and his mom sewed me a purple blanket with a pocket for my feet.  He accidentally peed on our couch one night when he fell asleep on it.  Turn off.  He lived with Andy and his 2 other roommates J and R.  We knew each other since freshmen year because athletes all lived in the same dorm and we became fast friends.  I will never forget confiding in Andy in the training room, how do I handle his friend who did that?

That New Years Eve was the beginning of the rest of my life.  The party was fun and I remember a brown parchment paper on the wall with pens hanging to the side.  Instructions were to write down your New Years resolution.  You can only imagine all the dumb goals people jotted on there after they had a beer or 3.  I am pretty sure it was close to midnight.  In strolled A. He brought along Andy and probably R and J.  I didn't want A to be next to me at midnight.  I wasn't ready for that.  So I hid downstairs, next to the keg-even though beer wasn't my thing.  Down strolled Andy.  A never found me.

The next morning, probably hung over, I connected to AOL instant messenger to wish my mom and dad a happy new year.

rmustard10: guess who kissed me last night?
isobarb: Andy

Hmmm...that is strange. Her first guess? I know, for a fact, that I never, ever ever ever mentioned having a crush on Andy.  My mom knew about A, R, J and Andy because they were my friends.  She must have had that intuition about her youngest daughter over the months.  I can't even describe how WEIRD it is that my mom was able to guess that Andy was the one who kissed me, and she knew just how excited I was.  It should have been my first sign. Andy and I started to hang out and hid our relationship a bit because MY roommate K always had a thing for Andy and well, there was his roommate A who may not be cool with it either.    Once I drove him home (in my roommates car, because I didn't have one yet and THAT story will be told another day) and dropped him off a block from his house-sneaky.

Andy liked to make hamburger helper after a night "out".
Once he made a stew in the crock pot and sliced cucumber (with the skin) in it, just for me.  Have you ever eaten hot cucumber?
It all worked out, our friends weren't mad and they found "the one" too.
Happily ever after.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------

"You put ranch on my salad".
"Yeah." I said.
"You did last week too" he informed me.  "I'm into French dressing now".
Hmmm.  Later that week I bought some Balsamic Vinaigrette for myself.

So.... Eli and Hugh (and any other future children)-this is just a glimpse of your dad and me, now and then.  What I wouldn't give for a few "moments" from my mom and dad's past-when they met, and what life was like when they were raising me.  I hope some day this makes your head tilt when you read it.

Fixed

Hi,

I fixed the video at the end of the previous blog. Sorry. Check it out.

Love,
Me

I'm a fan

Today I'm a fan of:

1.  This post.  If you're a mom-read it. If you're about to be a mom-read it. If you have or had a mom-read it.  I often tell my sister "I don't remember mom yelling at us as much as I feel I have to yell at Eli" and I use the word "yell" but usually it's more like redirecting, reminding and disciplining.  I know I was as much of a pip to my mom as Eli can be and she had her methods and words she chose to help me grow up.  But I agree with so much in this post.  When I went off to college I started to realize how cool my mom was.  She was fun and a friend. I still needed her help, her advice, her support and so much more.  But now we could go places and I wasn't embaressed I was proud and glad.  Now that I'm a mom I typically spend 5 minutes a day thinking about how sorry I am for giving my mom a hard time at different stages of my life.    It's sickening to say but I don't think I even realized that my mom was a person outside of being a mom.  She was never Barb to me. When I was 3, 8, 12, 15-life was all about me.  I learned my manners and was taught how to be polite, a friend and a student.  But I doubt I ever walked in the kitchen and said to my mom "What would you like to do today? Do you want me to do my homework and then empty the dishwasher for you so you can read your book? Do you want to go for a bikeride?  I could fold the towels for you".  Instead I'm pretty sure that my thought process revolved around when could she wash my jeans, would she have dinner ready when I was hungry, could she drop me off at this friends house.  It makes me so sad now but I can't go back and change it. I can only say sorry, thank you, what do you want to do today? And it gives me hope that my kids who now seem to view me only as a mom and never, ever as Raina (Who might want to sit in the quiet for a half hour and read a book) will turn out well, with manners, respect, creative ideas and love for me.

2.  This Recipe: Indonesian Peanut Butter Chicken  (Serves 4)
Ingredients: 1/3 cup natural peanut butter
2 tbsp brown sugar
1/2 tsp gluten free soy sauce
1/2 tsp seasame oil
2 garlic cloves, chopped
1/4 tsp cayenne pepper
1/2 tsp ground ginger
16-18 frozen chicken drumettes  (I USED CHICKEN BREAST!)
seasame seeds, crushed red pepper flakes (optional)
2 limes, cut in wedges

Melt peanut butter on high in 4 qt slow cooker.  Add brown sugar, soy sauce, sesame oil, garlic, cayenne and ginger. Stir to combine. Add chicken and toss to coat. Cover and cook on low for 6-8 hours or on high for 4-5 hours.  Garnish with red pepper flakes and seasame seeds.  Serve over rice with lime wedges.

-This is easy and yummy and I've made it twice.
-I didn't use chicken drumettes-I used white chicken meat.
-Vegetarians could make this and would taste good with tofu
-I didn't have the lime or seasame seeds and it was still awesome.

12 Months

Dear Hughie,

You are 1 now.

12 big 'ol months!
We made it. We survived all the infant scares.
Cheers to all the generic phrases that pertain to you:
-Such a good baby, cute baby, adorable
-You light up my life, I adore you, I cherish every moment I have with you
-You are my sunshine, you brighten my every day
-I can't help but smile when you are around

Boo hoo to the only thing that does not fit this picture-you don't sleep through the night.

You checked out with Dr. B perfectly.
Height:  31.5 inches (93%)
Weight: 21 lbs 11 oz  (54%)
Head Circumference: 47.5 cm  (85th%)

Nicknames: Hughie, Hugh Lou, Louie, Hugh to the Lou, Hugh Master, Loodie lou, Hughster, Hubert, Lou-Lou
You've been a healthy boy and haven't needed doctor visits or medications.  Thank you for that.

Did you know you are hyper color?  Even the doctor noticed.  If we touch you-it shows up.  Red marks on your forehead, arms, bottom, legs, feet, fingers, nose-everywhere.  You show off quite a strong rash if Daddy decides to give you kisses.

You love to have someone take your socks and shoes off for you.  It brings a big smile on your face.  You got this from me.  As I've mentioned in previous posts, you furrow your brow when you eat.  You are meticulous in picking up each bite of food as you put it safely in your mouth.  In the last 2 weeks you have started throwing food you don't want onto the floor.  This frustrates dad but makes Bailee's day.  You're favorite foods are fruit, veggies, noodles, cheese and black beans.  You are now drinking whole milk out of a sippy cup and a bottle.

You still only have 8 teeth. You are trying to run after your brother and follow his lead whenever you can.

One of the cutest things going on around here now is that you are fitting into 12 month clothes.  Most of your outfits and jammies are straight up hand me downs from your big brother. But Eli didn't wear most of these clothes until he was 2 years old.  It makes it seem like all the outfits are new because a toddeling one year old wearing these clothes is much different from a confident 2 year old.  I love it.

You desire bath time.  You scream and yell but play silently by yourself in the other room. You can say "more" in sign language but mostly you just hold your arms out straight and clamp your hands in and out, squeezing your hands in and out of fists.  If Dad or I sit on the floor you run to us and we better have our arms ready for you because you throw yourself into us earlier than expected.  You love to be held, but you love to be on the move.  You love attention but you don't like it if Dad talks to you sternly.

This is the year that I've gotten some of my best compliments.  So many friends and family noticed how happy I seem.  Happier than I have ever been.  And I know you contribute a big part to that.  What better complement is there?  "You seem so happy" is something I will take with me forever and I hope you hold that near to your heart since you play a big role.  There is just something about YOU that connects to ME and I love that. I need it.  You fit perfectly nestled in my arm at bedtime.  It's generic but it's true-I am just so blessed.

You're little personality continues to emerge and I truly can't wait to see what will happen in this next year of your special life.

Amaze me. Smile at me. Love me. Make me laugh. Grow big, grow strong. Stay healthy. Learn a lot.
In return and just because, I will do anything you need.  I want to teach you, love you, cuddle you, see you, smell you, hold you, guide you, and be the perfect mom for you.

Love,
Mom

32

So...he turned 32.

You better believe that even with Valentines Day and Hugh's 1st birthday hoopla that we didn't forget about Andy.  Eli worked hard on some cards and we baked a gluten free cake (which Andy picked out). We hung the Happy Birthday banner and made him a special breakfast.

I planned a little outing for his birthday and even though it got changed up at the last minute (Because my dad broke his ankle in multiple spots on Andy's birthday so Grandma Barb couldn't babysit because OH MY GOSH DAD/GRANDPA BOB!) but we still had a really nice time.

Sorry it's blurry but here we are, ready to go out...minutes before the call from my dad
So it wasn't a trip to Vegas.  It wasn't a new car. Just a night together, a yummy dinner, a few fun drinks, laughs with friends, competitive games and cake with Eli.

Andy is the guy who makes my world go round. And I'm not just saying that. If you've ever been with me when I'm away from him then you know how often I check in with him. I feel safer, warmer, more myself with him. And I'm not just saying that either. Sounds cheesy right? But I really lucked out with him. Marriage has not been hard for us. It HAS been a walk in the park. It's the one part of my life that has been easy peasy. And I say that with confidence even though you are probably rolling your eyes.

So many people know that Andy is such a wonderful husband. I know it, you know it, she knows it (he probably knows it). And I'm proud of it-so I don't hide it. (I also secretly like to think that he is such a good husband because I am a good wife and make him happy too! Is that ok to think?) One day my friend texted me the best compliment ever and I wrote it down. I never want to forget it. Ever.
"You're a goooooood woman. Like sooo good. You're a great match, you and Andy. I love to watch him in action. I always learn from you both. I just think you and him are sooooo good to each other. So in tune. So content. Never jealous or hurtful to each other. Like perfect pair. Sometimes I'm jealous of what you have. I wish my husband and I would always act that way. You're so exactly unconditional. And it's amazing to see, I love it."

Man! I feel the same way so it is nice to see that others can identify this about us. And I hope that some how, some way I am able to give back to Andy all the joy, ease, help, laughs, comfort and love that I am lucky to get from him.

But Andy isn't only known for being a great husband.  In his 31st year of life he became a dad of his second son. He mowed the lawn, shoveled the driveway, washed the dishes, laundered the clothes, changed the oil, baked the gluten free cookies, rubbed my feet, lost 20 pounds, helped my dad carry up the Christmas tree, picked out new windows, ran two 10K races,  went fishing, planned a surprise trip to Door County for our Anniversary, fixed a few lights in the house that I never thought would work, finished the Tough Mudder and made so many laugh, among many, many other things.

There are so many words I would use to describe Andy, the 32 year old Birthday Boy: Decent, hard working, fun, nice, helpful, funny, relaxed, sensitive, laid back, loyal, easy to please, athletic, simple, family man, adventurous, responsible, well liked....the list goes on and on. What word can you add to the list to describe this man?

Happy birthday Andy (A little late).

Sledding

I know a lot of us are ready to be done with the freezing cold and the snow.
I am too.
But I was glad we got a nice chunk of white so we could try the whole sledding thing.

So we bundled up.

And headed to the hill across the street.  We had to (literally) trudge through the snow to get there.  And that is a lot of work with a 3 year old who can't quite keep up and a 1 year old who needs to be held.  We tried to pull them on the sled to the hill but they just tipped backwards.

We all had a good time.  Spring can come now!  I didn't get a shot of myself with the boys but I did get this funny little video. I thought it was such a good idea when my sister recently posted a video of herself sledding with her littlest.  Someday I bet Hugh will smile when he sees this.  Pure joy!
