This boy of mine

"You must not expect old heads upon young shoulders."

-English proverb

This boy...

He makes my heart and breaks my heart.  I love him to pieces and pieces and pieces.
I knew having a 2nd child would be hard on him.  He was excited but I don't think he really grasped what it truly meant.  And he still won't know what this brother means for many, many years.  Some day I know he'll thank us, but for now I know he is struggling to understand what it means to share a mom and dad.  He actually has said twice that "Hugh lost his mom and dad".  And looks at us questioningly when we remind him that we are his mom and dad.
Eli has helped with diaper changes and has done very well with understanding when mom has to feed Hugh.  But he has asked to sit in my lap (and has never really done that before) which I think may have been a test to see if I would put Hugh down (which I did) and also asked me to change his diaper instead of daddy-again a request that has never been made.  My sister reminded me (a great tip) that if Hugh starts crying when I'm playing with Eli that I should say out loud "Just a second Hugh, I'm playing with Eli".

Eli has started to really misbehave.  It is all age appropriate but it hurts my heart that a lot of our interaction deals with us explaining why we don't want him acting a certain way, asking and telling him to stop doing something or even using the time out corner.  Because I have so many hormones after giving birth I will admit that I have cried every day-and always over Eli. I just don't want him to be confused about the amount of love we feel for him. I don't want him to feel replaced, not good enough or "in trouble" all the time.  It's a lesson he has to learn and I don't think his amazing 2.5 year old mind can handle these concepts.  But it's real hard on this mama's heart.  He seems like such a big boy to me now.  But I have to remember his age and realize that his actions are typical, normal and almost expected with all the changes going on.  I have to remind myself (and Andy) that just because there is a newborn in the house, doesn't mean that Eli should start to act like he is 12.  I still want a childhood for Eli, for him to learn things one at a time and to continue with the genuine, unconditional happiness that comes along with being a kiddo.

The other day I read this-and it struck me.  I want to print it out and post it on the refrigerator for me to read over and over and over again.

Anytime we expect more than we should, we are setting ourselves up for failure. This is true in all things and parenting is no exception. When your kids are acting like kids, don't be surprised. It's their job. They are going to do stupid things like attaching a sister's Barbie to a ceiling fan to "see how far she can fly when the rope snaps." They will fight bedtime and green vegetables on principle alone. They will get upset and frightened over "silly" things like monsters and rainstorms. It's our job to take all of that in stride and set boundaries and limitations that will benefit them anyway. Kids are kids and that's how it should be. We shouldn't be trying to stamp that infectious joy and curiosity out of them because we want them to be mature. That will come if and only if we show them what maturity looks like no matter what "childish" things they do.

On the way home from my aunts house yesterday I cried over his behavior.  I discussed with Andy multiple parenting issues that have come about.  Eli witnessed all of this, although I know he didn't really understand.  He kept saying "Mama, you feel better?".  I was so disappointed in his behavior I kept saying "No, not yet".  He didn't give up.  "Mama, now you feel better?".  Finally....after maybe 10 minutes he said, clear as a bell,  "Mama, let me see a smile".  I couldn't resist-i=I turned and gave him a smile.  It melted my heart.
At dinner he was eating watermelon and he found the smallest, tiniest piece to pick up and eat.  I said "Wow that was a tiny piece of watermelon."  His response melted my heart "It wanted to be in my tummy by the mama watermelon".  So cute.

I also can't stop reading this blog post-check it out here.  To me it is not about that the 3rd was a girl, or that it was a 3rd.  What strikes me is that the truth behind having more than one child is a gift. A gift to yourself, a gift to the world and even more importantly-a gift to a child you already have.  A sibling is something that may be hard to understand at first, but becomes the best gift a child will ever receive.  Usually a brother or sister is someone you will know the longest in your life-from birth to death which can be sad to think about as a parent because we will age much faster than a younger sibling.  Hugh is a true gift to Eli.  And vice versa.  They will become to each other someone to romp with, be creative and mischievous with, to cheers a beer, chase bunnies, make eyes at each other over mom's yucky dinner, stand up in each others wedding, possibly become a god parent to a niece or nephew, become friends, learn from, laugh with, understand anger through, share share share with and above all else-love.
The other concept this blog points out to me: a lesson good to learn early-they are not the center of the universe.  I love that Eli has been up until now.  But it's true-I don't want him walking through life thinking he is the center of any universe.  Just as Hugh isn't the center of the universe (although they are both my centers).
I always tell Andy through my emotional tears that I just don't want Eli to hurt because of this.  I don't want him to be confused about why we have a baby.  But I also want him to learn this lesson-that he is no less to us, but will become so much more every single day whether or not he has a sibling or not.  And I remind myself to look at it from Hugh's perspective.  There is a LOT that Eli got to experience that Hugh will never.  Hugh will never be "an only" or "the first".  Eli will always be the one who brought us the joy of bragging about every little thing.  Hugh's accomplishments will still mean the same joy-but may not be shared as much.  Hugh will wear a lot of Eli's clothes and use a lot of Eli's toys-he will have less "new" and will never know what i t means to not have to share (attention, toys, bath etc).  We will do our best to make Hugh feel all the special that he truly is-taking pictures of just him (without big brother), signing him up for things that Eli did not participate in etc.  This past weekend we started this by doing a special photo shoot in our dining room.

(more pictures to come).

So dear Eli,
please know that I will still check on you in your bed every night, you will still be my baby, my first baby and now my boy.  I am still completely excited about every single one of your accomplishments and can't bear to miss any of your simple and not so simple moments.  Things are changing but nothing is being taken away from you.  Go be the big brother that you are and I'll be there every step of the way.

Yes we have a new member in our family--but today I'm not blogging about Mr. Hugh.
I don't know if I have officially introduced Liz on my blog but here she is.
furthest gal on the right
Liz is engaged to my big brother.  A special wedding is to come this summer (which I'm totally stoked about).  Liz brings a lot of things to the table and it excites me to gain a new sister in all of this.  Liz has an amazing sense of style. She is really good with kiddos. She is competitive and plays games and keeps my brother in line.  She's comfortable in the kitchen and brings the vegetarianism to our dinner table.  Shes active and adventurous and is full of life experiences.  She is great for my brother.
She is also creative and makes really cool jewelry, sews ipad cases and other neat designed items.  Today in the mail we were gifted 2 long sleeved onesies.  They are So. Cool.
I want Mr. Hugh to wear them every day until he grows out of them.  And to think she whipped these out within the last week.  Amazing.  Thanks Liz...........

I can't wait until I can have a 30% discount in her botique someday.

This is How I Roll

Today Andy went back to work, so it feels like a Monday.  I actually have no concept of date, day of the week or time of the day.  This is the start of sleep deprivation.  Every time I get a chance to close my eyes I wake up with a startle-I have no clue if it's day or night, if I've been sleeping for 4 minutes or 45.  I don't know where anyone else is and I have to immediately clear my head to determine if Hugh is in the bassinet next to me or if he is in Andy's arms and who knows where Eli may be tumbling.

So today, I'm on my own and it's a Friday.  My first day alone is right before a weekend-a good way to start.  And, to make things even more smooth, Eli went to his day care for half the day.  So that is how it is possible that I am able to blog-a moment to myself.  Hugh is at my feet in a bouncy chair and should be ready to eat very soon.  I'm still in my pajamas and am eating grits for breakfast right out of a glass measuring cup.  This is how I will roll...

As soon as the boys walked out of the house (Uncle Chris visited and stayed over night) Bailee (woof) stood up and threw up all over the living room carpet.  I cleaned that up first and then sighed.  I have a long list of things I'd love to do today, but I have complete, COMPLETE confidence that I will NOT let myself feel guilt for anything that doesn't get done today or that may or may not get done all weekend.  This is how I'll try to roll.

I think I'm still catching up from the day that labor started (last Saturday at 2 am).  When you're up from 2 am until about 11 pm the next night, it's hard to catch up-especially when you are then up every 1-3 hours (literally).  So yeah, it's causing some hormones but that's all normal, expected and I'm letting myself roll with it.

Things to note- Hugh hates to have his diaper changed.  It's such a process, especially if he needs new clothes because he had an explosive diaper.  He has been a really good baby and I hope this continues.  It's only day 5.  He's nursing well, sleeping as expected and looking oh-so-darn cute.  I think this is how he will roll.

Eli is adjusting. It's tough on these "big" kids and older siblings.  We are taking it one day at a time.  He has a lot of "special" and "treats" going on and I'm not sure how he'll be when some of that wears off.  Visits from special family and friends, extra cartoons here or there, art projects and trips to fun places with mom or dad.    He raises his voice an extra special octave when he talks to baby Hugh and often has to ask mommy where Hugh is.  He's been getting up really early and taking shorter naps.  I'm hoping he doesn't get sick.  If he does, we'll roll right to the doctors office.

I could tell Andy had a hard time leaving today.  I know he didn't really want to return to work-so he took Monday off so he has a 3 day weekend.  He's been getting better sleep than me at night but then helping so much with Eli in the morning or during the day.  I love Andy's dis-belief laugh at how he has 2 sons, who he thinks (and I know) are the most beautiful little creatures there ever were.  I'll never forget everything about Andy in the delivery room. He is an amazing husband and our birth story is only what it is because of him.  Today he walked out the door with his coffee in hand.  It snowed a lot last night and he shoveled for a good 30-45 minutes before getting ready for work.  However-the plows haven't gone through yet.  I'm stuck with the little car and a possible snowed in driveway.  Makes me nervous when I have to take lil Hugh to go pick up Eli after lunch.  I asked Andy "What if I get stuck after the plows go by?" and he said "Just gun it through".  I am not going to GUN anything with Hugh around. HA!  Luckily Andy works less than 1 mile away and he'll come to my rescue if I need it.  That's how he rolls.

Who remembers this shot?
This is Eli when he was (almost) a month old
Check this shot out.....
Andy needs his glasses on....
Ok so Hugh's face is already more round than Eli's ever was.  I know he's going to chunk up nice and plump for us.  But Andy and I see a lot of Eli in him already.  It will be so so so interesting to see the differences in personality.  I'm looking forward to each and every day with these boys.

I couldn't resist, I just think this pictures is so funny.
This is how Hugh rolls....with literal rolls of skin around his face if you position your hands just right.  So soft and round.

Love a little late

Happy valentines day. A little late.

Here I'm sharing something I love.
There is no message in the lyrics that I am relating to.  I'm not even a huge fan of this artist-although I don't dislike him either. But I'm in to the song.

I do hope it does not too quickly become overplayed. But right now.....

More words but no words...

It's been a long couple days since I've last blogged.  I've written my blog posts in my head many, many times.  But I haven't sat down to actually write them.  Maybe it's because I've literally run out of room on my lap for my lap top to sit!  I've been feeling so many emotions in the last few weeks and even more so in the last few days that it's hard to put down in history.
I won't bother you with my various physical woes.  Those closest to me know that I'm battling what most late-in-the-game pregnant ladies experience and it's no fun.  I'm doing my best to control my moods and emotions when I'm at work.  I get so many comments I've started to tally them.  If I have to return to work on Monday I'll try to bring those stats home with me.  One gal says I look happy.  I told her it was a lot of fake smiles throughout the day.  One morning I took the stairs and someone told me I was brave.  After a full morning of the stairs (up and down, up and down) I decided to take the elevator.  The first co-rider had to comment that I was taking the elevator instead of the stairs.  I told her-"well I took the stairs all morning and I didn't have a single contraction."

I've been blessed with a healthy Eli and an awesome husband.  Eli has turned into this incredibly talkative, I-make-sense type of boy.  It makes Andy and I smile and it makes me shake my head.  He is constantly on the look out for some witch that is hiding somewhere and will come out to get us.  He plays make believe with his cars and always wants someone to play with him.  He talks to the baby belly and says "You want to come out? Ok! Ok!" ha.  We've been taking him to lots of fun places...just him. The only. For now.
The baby swing is ready....but so far is being used to store Thomas's.

We also have been working on discipline, the idea of a baby and what that means for him as a big brother and also his sleep habits.  We started a zzzzzz (sleeping) sticker chart for him and this worked swell.  He gets a sticker if he goes to bed well and if he behaves in the morning.  He picked the spot for the sticker chart and I love it.  It's posted on the back of our front door-so he passes it every night when he makes his way for the stairs.  Every time he got a sticker on the 5th day, he got a special surprise.  This kept it very exciting.

Tonight I'm smiling because I have 2 awesome friends with 2 new baby girls-I'm so excited to meet them both.  And it makes me wonder if girls come in 3's or if I'll have the boy they can fight over ;)

Tonight I'm smiling because I have this awesome man in my life  (Happy 31st birthday!)
That's a yummy icecream cake that I made him for his special day
Tonight I'm smiling because not having had the baby yet means I get to enjoy reading my book, feel kicks and dream about the unknown.

Tonight I'm smiling because tomorrow is Sunday, NOT Monday.

Tonight I'm smiling because the new season of Survivor starts this week.

Tonight I'm smiling because I've been using the ipad more to talk to my sister over chat and facetime with my mom and my sister at random times.

Recently:
For Eli: We have taken a trip to a Children's museum and spent a few hours at an indoor park that he got to run wild in.  Both Grandma's came to visit.  We painted a wooden sailboat (Boy does that boy like to paint) and have been snuggling as much as we can.
For Andy: We celebrated his birthday with  a steak dinner out (His choice) and homemade icecream cake.  He got a few presents and a surprise baby shower at work!
For Me: I painted my toes for the labor and delivery room, I lay in bed for an extra 20-30 minutes in the morning and I called the nurse when I had concerns.
For the baby: We are still talking about names.  This is so hard for us!  We are putting as much thought as we can without becoming obsessed.  I've been eating spicy food, doing extra walking and all the other things they suggest to get labor going. But I'm also working VERY hard at accepting that you are comfortable in there.

Like I said I'm going through a lot of emotions.  One big one is 5 minute spurts of worry.  I allow myself to be worried for 5 minutes and then I move on.  Recently my worries are that the baby is getting huge.  I just want to know that the baby won't get stuck and I won't be hurting.  My other worry is that all I have to compare this experience with is my previous one.  That's totally normal and expected.  The pregnancy, tests and scans have been normal.  Nothing to be concerned about.  But I'm worried that since something unexpected and never really explained as far as etiology happened, that it could happen to us again.  I'm not worried the same type of unexplained thing would happen-but more so that something different unexpected could come about.  It causes my heart to flutter a little bit.  5 minutes Raina. Breathe.

I can't wait to share my news with everyone.  I can't really focus on anything except the inevitable--when to call Grandma Barb to come be with our 1st and only little so that our next love can come into this world!

3

Yesterday at work....

Elderly man in the waiting room of the clinic (where I was working):  "Triplets right"?

Me:  "I hope not!"  (inside....sob, tears, breathe)

I guess this is what having triplets looks like?
And yes...Andy has been instructed to keep me headless in these shots!
This shot is for baby #2 -so he/she can see what "home" was for 9+ months

On a side note and because I need to work on being an optimist-I got a few really nice compliments today and need to focus on those.
